Yes I know I post a lot of custom Road builds and only a few CX builds but that will change I promise. What better CX brand to showcase our latest custom builds than Focus. I first picked up Focus bikes in about 2010 when it was unknown to all but the most dedicated cross aficionados. We were the only dealer in Western Canada and one of only a couple dealers in Canada, with our friends at La Bicicletta in TO the other. As always I was in search of cool, race proven and unique product to fill our small northern shop and Focus checked the right boxes.
Flash forward to 2017 and the brand has grown tremendously in Canada with many dealers coming on board, this growth has undoubtedly been fuelled by Marketing manager’s dream and PRW friend Jeremy Powers. Of, course if the bikes weren’t good having Powers on em wouldn’t be enough (sorry JPow). But hey don’t take my word for it; check out any Alberta CX race and you will see many Focus rigs including our local rep Phil V who is always out there and pins a number too. Pick his brain anytime. Also in 2016 Alberta’s own Aaron Schooler decided to put his racing on the back burner and put together the Focus CX Canada Team. In its inaugural year they won the Elite Men’s National Title with Jeremy Martin plus Aaron came in a close second. Ashley Barson took a solid seventh in the Elite Women’s race and Edmonton’s own Sidney Mcgill took the Women’s U23 Jersey. Not bad in the first year. PRW is proud to be a sponsor of the Team that showcases the Focus brand in not only the Canadian CX scene but North America and Europe as well. I am honoured to have a small part in Aaron’s vision and there is some cool stuff in the works for 2018. Yes the Mares is a great CX race machine but I still feel with the geometry the Mares has it’s a perfect Gravel/Groad or whatever the magazines call it bike. I even recall it being raced in Paris Roubaix back in the Canti days.
Like any brand we offer, custom is where my heart lies. Stock is an ok start but as I have said before, some Brand Manager doesn’t know you like PRW knows you ☺. We can help guide that thought process to make you a supremely unique machine that will make your buddies question their past purchases. It will be faster too, I promise.
Below are two recent builds. Leading the charge is a beautiful Shimano Di2 build, set up 1X with a XT RD. Cranks are Easton Carbon with the Cinch PM which has been the go to for CX application proving its durability. Easton Carbon Tubulars mated to super supple Challenge tubs finish it off. A bike that any Pro would love to through a leg over.
Not to be outdone, the next build is SRAM Etap. To me one of the best applications of the paddle shifters is a 1X set up. This go around we have a wifli RD with Easton Carbon once again providing the Crank and Ring. You can really appreciate the wireless Etap in this set up as it is so clean. Went with a Wolftooth Chain Guide as extra insurance when things get really bumpy. Bars are the Easton Carbon SLX paired with a Carbon Time stem. Why the Time stem? Cuz its light, stiff and matches perfectly with the Mares green accents and it was the right size. Even with the alloy disc training wheels this rig came in just a hair over 16lbs…
These bikes have happy caring homes but don’t fret, we can make more.
